So tell me what songs would you like to hear?  Post a comment to this post and I will consolidate a list.  Over the next month, I will post of list of the songs that have been requested.  So keep checking back…..

A couple of things:  I moderate all of the comments so if you don’t see them hit the post right away be patient.  I will also respond to each and everyone.  I will do my best to play all of the requests at the dance, but there is only so many songs that you can fit into two hours.

Please come up and say hi at the dance.  This is your event, be a part of it.

Look forward to meeting you all and Congratulations!

DJing school dances!

I recently DJed a school dance at a elementary school.   It was really fun to watch!  It reempahized to me why I love what I do.  Some of the kids were singing, some were juming up and down, some were moving around and some of the boys were chasing each other around the floor.  It made me stop those two boys and ask them what song they would like to hear.  They both looked and me and said “Why this one of course!”

To some, things might have seen a bit chaotic with all of the activity on the floor.  To me, it brought simple joy as all of those kids were simply expressing themselves the way they knew how to the songs that were being played.

I loved the fact that there were tons of kids at my DJ table requesting songs.  I wish I could have played them all in the two hour window.  I am so happy that schools are still hosting dances.  I hope it continues for many many years as to this day I still remember my school dances!

If you are in need of a DJ for your next school dance, please give me a call at (303) 931-5316.  I would love to do it!

Bringing in the NEW YEAR with family and friends

So… what music would you like to  bring in the New Year with?    Could it be a song that brings back childhood memories? How about that song that you ROCKED to in High School?  What about your first dance at your wedding or maybe a song that you would like to dance with your signficant other with?  What about the song that your mom listened to when you were a kid?  Maybe it is a new tune that your heard on the radio just the other day.

Submit a comment and let me know what songs you would like to bring in the New Year with.    What song do you want to sing to?  Anxious to hear from you!

Playing music at your next team building event

I believe that music is an important part of any event.   It sets the tone the minute people walk in the door.  If you want to start any meeting or event whether it be a lesson learn meeting or a trade show or a simple luncheon/pot luck with a positive tone play some music.  It will be a great kickoff.  Music is the backdrop of everyday life.

Here are some music suggestions to use at the beginning, middle or end of your event.

  • Here come the sun – The Beatles
  • We can work it out – The Beatles
  • Lean on Me – Club Noveau
  • Let’s Get Together – The Youngbloods
  • Better Together – Jack Johnson
  • Dancing in the Moonlight – King Harvest
  • One Love/People Get Ready – Bob Marley
  • Three Little Birds – Bob Marley
  • Ventura Highway – America
  • Walking on Sunshine – Katrina & the Waves
  • King of the Road – Roger Miller
  • Come Monday – Jimmy Buffet

There are many many more here are just a few.  Give it a try and see with your own eyes!

Don’t be afraid to play a Polka Dance at your next event

Polka dancing is FUN!  It is an easy dance to learn and even if you don’t really know how, you can basically get on the dance floor and muddle your way through.   I have been to many events, where the most experienced DJs had a hard time getting the people on the dance floor.  But when Aunt Izzie wants to hear a polka and one is played,  the dance floor fills up and there is a lot of laughter and smiles to be shared.  It is fun.  Here are some my favorite polka songs to dance to and a great polka dance illustration video.

  1. Beer Barrel Polka – Frankie Yankovic
  2. Too Fat Polka – Frankie Yankovic
  3. In Heaven there is no Beer – Frankie Yankovic  (ok I like the name of this one)

YEE HAW!!!!

As the Music Turns….the graduation parties begin!

All high school graduates should have music playing at their graduation party.   Listening to some music today reminds me of my high school days,  some of the most memorable days of my life.

Some of my best experiences is playing music for the youth.  I love watching them sing and listening to the music. Music is an escape that we all need at times.

During some of my experiences as a DJ, I have noticed that the kids not only like the new stuff on the block, but also like the music that their  parents listen to and have grown up with.  Here are some of the requests I received from the high school students in the past.

1.  Don’t stop believing – Journey

2.  Friend in Low Place – Garth Brooks

3.  Mr. Jones – Counting Crows

4.  Thriller – Michael Jackson

5.  You Shook Me all Night Long – AC/DC

6.  Anything from Bob Marley

7.  Jack and Diane – John Cougar Mellencamp

Congratulations 2010 Seniors!

Look forward to DJing your parties!!!!!

Karen

As the Music Turns…..the ballroom dancing begins

As I mentioned before, I love to dance to all kinds of music.  I grew up mainly dancing to country music and rock-n-roll, OK and maybe to some disco.   My favorite dance is the waltz.  I love the beat, the elegance and the way your partner is moving you around the floor.   It is simply beautiful and elegant.

Two kids later (a twenty-year old and a six-year old), I decided it was time for me to start dancing again.  So where do I go?  I started by doing a google search ‘ballroom dancing in Littleton, CO’ and one of the  first places that came up was Colorado Dancesport located at 5151 South Federal Boulevard, Littleton, CO  80123.   http://www.coloradodancesport.com They seem to have one of the best introductory specials around.  Three – 25 minutes private lessons, one 55 minute group lessons and one Friday Practice Party for $25.00.  So I signed my daughter and I up.  My six-year old daughter who is super shy had a hard time going to a strange man at first, but by the fourth lesson she is warming up.   The place was flexible and broke my daughters lessons into five – fifteen minute lessons.   Our instructor Scott is really great to dance with and great with kids.  He is a great dancer and a really nice guy. What music brings to me

Hello!

How exciting, my first official blog!

When thinking about what I wanted to write about, I started to think about music and why it has been important to me.  Most of my best memories have been through songs.  Hearing a song on the radio, brings back high school memories, life event memories, childhood memories.  I remember dancing around the house as a kid.  It was an inexpensive way to bring the family

Karen - As the Music Turns

together.  To me, it was really fun.  We use to move all of our furniture out of the living room and invite people over that had never danced.  We would dance.

It is enjoyable to me to look around the room and watch people sing, tap their feet, smile, and if they like , dance.  As the music turns, people laugh, people smile, people dance, people sing, people reminisce, people feel good.  That is why I like sharing music with others.

Some of my most memorable experiences after doing a DJ gig is having a middle school student come up to me with two thumbs up or hearing someone say to me, will you come back again after playing at a middle school dance.  Or hearing someone say, that party started once that DJ arrived.  Or watching a bunch of 40 year old guys singing out loud to ’Paradise by the Dashboard Light’ by  Meatloaf.

I hope as this blog evolves to continue to share with you some of my most memorable experiences, whether it be at a wedding, tailgate party, father/daughter dance, middle school or high school dance, graduation party, birthday party and as equally important a corporate event.  Watching people come into a meeting when music is playing and watching their defenses break down, is calming and soothing to watch and experience.

I would like to have reviews of my favorite Karaoke places and experiences, my favorite places to dance whether it be country, swing, ballroom, rock or simply my favorite place to listen to music on a jukebox.

I hope throughout my journey that you would also share with me some of your most memorable experiences when listening to music.

What does music do for you?  What are your most memorable experiences with music?  Hope to hear from you.
